Remembering Larry Carius, Bloomington-Normal Restaurant Scene

On November 22, 2024, our family faced an immeasurable loss with the passing of my father-in-law, Larry Carius. We are heartbroken, and I know many in the community share this grief. Larry was a man deeply connected to Bloomington-Normal, beloved by many as the voice behind the immensely popular Bloomington-Normal Restaurant Scene.

Larry had an unwavering passion for this community and found joy in sharing news and updates about the local restaurant scene. His dedication extended beyond social media, as he also wrote a cherished monthly column for The Pantagraph. Through his words, he brought joy, knowledge, and excitement to readers across the area.

For over 30 years, Larry and his wife, Kay, welcomed me into their family with open arms. Their kindness, warmth, and love have been a blessing in my life. I feel incredibly grateful to be part of such an amazing family.

Larry Carius | A Life Well-Lived and Loved

After retiring in 2008, Larry’s passion for Bloomington-Normal remained steadfast. He channeled that energy into creating the Bloomington-Normal Restaurant Scene Facebook page, which now boasts over 43,000 followers. This page became a hub for local food enthusiasts, fostering community and keeping residents informed about new restaurant openings, closings, and everything in between.

Larry’s loves were clear: his wife Kay, his family, and wine. He and Kay also shared a passion for ballroom dancing, where their elegance on the dance floor amazed everyone who watched. Their relationship was a beautiful testament to love and devotion, and anyone who knew them admired the bond they shared. Larry absolutely adored her.

On a personal note, I will forever cherish the support Larry gave to my photography business, Karen Stauffer Photography, over the past 13 years. Larry’s love for Downtown Bloomington made it even more special to him that my studio is located there. Larry was incredibly proud of what I built, and his encouragement and belief in me will always hold a special place in my heart.

A Legacy That Lives On

Larry Carius touched countless lives in our community and beyond. His warmth, passion, and dedication left an indelible mark on Bloomington-Normal. While his presence will be deeply missed, his legacy will remain a source of inspiration for years to come.

Please keep his wife, Kay, and his three children—Doug, Dennis, and Brad—in your thoughts and prayers as they navigate this profound loss.

  1. I met Larry over 37 years ago when I married Kay’s brother. They came and stayed with us in Michigan many times. Larry loved to visit local restaurants in our area when they came to visit, inspiring us to get out and try new places! Their visits were always so enjoyable! One time he asked me if I knew what the number one attraction was in Detroit. Having lived in Michigan my entire life I thought I knew the answer. But I was wrong! Larry told me it was the Motown Museum. So when they came we took them there. It was excellent! He was right!

I always enjoyed his company. He will be missed

  2. I have known Larry since 1995. He truly had a passion for what he did. Loved his knowledge of food. Also remember when Larry decided he was going to start taking care of his health. He just started walking and walking. I always saw Larry walking and doing what he loved. He will be truly missed by this community. Thank you for sharing your passion with all of us and keeping us safe and informed. My heart goes out to his family that is where the true loss will be. RIP Larry.
